Top 5 Aftershaves 2026

Updated for Christmas 2026: buying one as a present? I've added a quick guide to which one to give, a few buying tips and our Christmas order dates further down.

Finding that signature scent isn't easy, even I (a self-proclaimed fragrance connoisseur) has difficulties when picking out my next aftershave. However, if you are struggling you have come to the right place. I have searched high and low and hand picked the five hottest fragrances for men for 2026.

As director of MakeYourHamper, my nose has been privy to an abundance of scents in the search to pick out the finest, to offer to our customers. From niche to TikTok trending this guide has it all.

As a young man myself (turning 21 at the time of writing), I know just how important it is to have the right fragrance. Whether it is a casual day at the office, a meeting with a potential business partner or a hot date, smelling good is part of that important first impression we are all so familiar with.

1. Creed Aventus - The Scent Everyone's Talking About (And Yes, It Lives Up to the Hype)

I'll be honest - I was sceptical. £300+ for a fragrance? But then I spritzed Aventus for the first time and… yeah, I get it now.

The opening hits immediately - sharp, smoky pineapple with this incredible freshness that somehow feels both bold and effortless. It's the kind of scent that makes people stop mid-conversation and ask "what are you wearing?" And trust me, they will ask.

As it settles, things get warmer. Birch wood and musk creep in and give it this confident, almost cinematic quality. It doesn't scream for attention - it commands it. There's a reason this has been a staple since 2010 and shows absolutely no signs of slowing down.

Is it worth the price? For an everyday signature scent, probably not. For a fragrance you pull out when it matters - a date, a big meeting, a night out - there is no question about it. It's an investment piece, like a classic watch or tailored suit.

Aventus isn't trying to be for everyone. But if you want to smell like someone who has their life together, it's a very good place to start.

2. YSL Y EDP - The Blue Fragrance That Actually Earns It

Yes, it's a blue fragrance. Yes, you've smelled something like it before. And yes, you should still own it.

YSL Y EDP sits in a crowded lane alongside Sauvage, Dylan Blue, Bleu de Chanel - and the fragrance community loves to argue about which one wins. But here's the thing: YSL Y does something the others don't quite nail. That apple note. It sounds gimmicky on paper but in practice it's sharp, juicy and genuinely addictive, balanced out by sage and a warm woody base that stops it tipping into body wash territory.

The longevity is no joke either - you're getting a solid 8 to 10 hours out of this, which for a designer price point is exactly what you want. Go easy on the trigger though, three or four sprays is enough. Anymore and you're announcing yourself before you've walked into the room, but if that's what you want, by all means go ahead!

Is it unique? No. Is it the most exciting thing in your collection? Probably not. But it's the one you'll actually reach for, and that counts for a lot.

3. Boss Bottled Elixir - Hugo Boss Just Changed The Game

Nobody expected this from Hugo Boss. That's the thing.

The original Bottled is a safe, reliable classic - great, but predictable. Elixir throws that playbook out entirely. This is dark, smoky, woody and deeply masculine in a way that feels more niche than something sold in every shop. Cardamom and incense up front, then cedarwood and labdanum settle in underneath and just... stay there. For hours. We're talking 10+ hours, which at this price is almost unbelievable.

General consensus was divided when it dropped in 2023. Some found it too intense, too left-field for a Boss release. And honestly? That's exactly why it works. It's not trying to please everyone. There's a confidence to it that you either get or you don't.

This is a cold weather fragrance through and through. Date night, a sharp outfit, somewhere with low lighting - that's where Elixir lives. Don't reach for it on a Tuesday morning in August. But on the right evening it's genuinely one of the most impressive designer releases in years.

Hugo Boss has been quietly putting out heat lately. Elixir is the proof.

4. Parfums de Marly Layton - The Fragrance That Started It All For Most of Us

There's a reason Layton is the first niche fragrance many buy. It's not an accident, and it's not just hype.

Green apple and lavender open things up in a way that's instantly distinctive without being weird or challenging. It's approachable but considered, like someone who clearly has taste but isn't trying to make you feel bad about yours. Then the dry down arrives - vanilla, cardamom, sandalwood. This is where Layton earns its reputation. Warm, spicy, genuinely elegant. It settles into this creamy, confident finish that just works on pretty much everyone.

Some call it the gateway drug of niche perfumery. Others say it's too crowd-pleasing to be taken seriously. Both are kind of right. But here's the thing - smelling incredible and being widely loved are not flaws.

Layton isn't trying to be difficult. It's trying to make you smell great. It succeeds every time.

5. Kilian Angel's Share - The One That Smells Like a Very Good Evening

There's a moment when you first spray Angel's Share where you genuinely stop and think - okay, that's different.

Cognac and cinnamon hit first, warm and boozy and unapologetically indulgent. It's the olfactory equivalent of settling into a leather armchair with a glass of something expensive. Then tonka bean and praline creep in underneath and the whole thing becomes this gorgeous, rich, almost edible warmth that lingers on your skin for hours. It's the kind of scent people lean in closer to ask about.

Is it subtle? Absolutely not. This is a cold evening fragrance through and through - date night, a good dinner, somewhere with candlelight. Wear this on a hot August afternoon and you'll regret every single spray.

Just make sure you're wearing it in the right season and it'll never let you down.

The price stings, no question. But when it works - it really works. There's a reason this one has a cult following that just keeps growing.

Which One Should You Give This Christmas?

If you're buying for someone else, here's how I'd match them up.

For a safe bet he'll love: YSL Y EDP. Fresh, easy to wear and liked by almost everyone, which makes it ideal for a dad, brother or new boyfriend.

For the best value: Boss Bottled Elixir. It lasts for hours and feels far more expensive than it is.

For his first niche fragrance: Parfums de Marly Layton. It's the one that gets most people into fragrance.

For someone who has everything: Kilian Angel's Share. Warm, rich and perfect for cold winter evenings.

For the big one: Creed Aventus. If he's into fragrance, he'll know exactly what it is.

Buying Aftershave as a Gift: 4 Quick Tips

Check the label. Most of what people call aftershave is actually eau de toilette or eau de parfum. A true aftershave splash is much lighter and fades quickly, so it's rarely what you want to give.

Eau de parfum usually lasts longer. If the price difference is small, it's normally the better gift.

50ml is the sweet spot. It's plenty for a new scent. Save the 100ml for one you know he loves.

Look out for Christmas gift sets. A lot of brands bring out sets with a shower gel or a travel spray in the box, which can be better value than the bottle on its own.

Giving One for Christmas?

Aftershave is one of the most popular Christmas presents there is, which is exactly why it's worth making it feel a bit more special than another box under the tree.

Or build your own hamper and pick Fragrances as one of their interests, then pair it with chocolates, a candle or socks. You can swap any item until it's right, and every hamper arrives hand-packed with a handwritten note.
